FESTETICS HELIKON TAVERNA EXHIBITION HALL OF WINE MAKING AND GASTRONOMY
The Taverna in Vonyarcvashegy was originally built to be a press-house around 1820. The cellar in Vonyarc was one of the most significant winery centres for the Festetics family – this is from where they managed their vine-growing and wine-making activities.
The conservation works of the Taverna building took place between 2006 and 2008 with exterior and interior renovation and the complete reconstruction of the roofing. As a result, the services of a 13-room guesthouse became available besides the renovated restaurant. Be developing a panoramic terrace the one-time Festetics-estate became a venue for events with a unique atmosphere.
From 2011, in parallel with constructing Zenit Hotel Balaton, the Taverna's surroundings were also made up. In 2012–2013 in the listed historic cellar – in harmony with the original vine-growing and wine-making traditions – a thematic exhibition area was formed that is unique in Hungary. Simultaneously, floodlighting was installed for the classicistic facade of the Taverna.
From October 2013 you can visit the "Da Bibere" thematic wine-making and gastronomic exhibition in the Helikon Taverna. The main thematic elements of the exhibition are the following:
- Regional Grape- and Wine-culture from the Roman Times until Nowadays.
- Digital contents on museum touch screens. Besides Hungarian, professional contents in English and German are also available on four touch screens.
- 3D movie room.
- For children and families. Besides the above exhibition contents and attractions, which are also interesting for children and families, we also had the youngest ones in mind. A big hit with kids is the scale-model of the Taverna built from LEGO blocks (naturally with vineyards and harvesters), and every visitor will have the opportunity to have green box photos with unique backgrounds taken.
- Everything about wine-tasting. There are about 100 types of wines in our selection. During tasting our wine glasses allow visitors to get an insight into the various wine styles and what glasses to use.
Please note that visiting the exhibition takes about 60-90 minutes (without the wine tastings). For visitors with children the tour can be designed for 60 minutes (taking into consideration the contents primarily interesting for children).
